It is one of the finest examples of coral reef resilience since the turn of the 20th century. Off Vostok Island, an atoll of the Kiribati Islands, enclosed in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, several species of coral survived the severe El Niño episode in 2015-2016. El Niño is a common, seasonal ocean phenomenon that causes temperatures to rise in the Pacific Ocean. In 2015-2016, the ocean temperature increased significantly, causing the disappearance of several species of coral. Fortunately, and following a study conducted in 2022, the corals off Vostok Island have finally regenerated. Scientists believe that some of these species are simply adapted to rising temperatures.
