Mountain priests of Japan
The Yamabushi (literally "those who prostrate in the mountains") are mountain ascetics from Japan. They follow the path of shugendō, a form of syncretic Japanese Buddhism. The Yamabushi are known for their pilgrimages to the mountains, where they seek communion with nature and the spirits. Their practices include meditation, purification rituals and fire-walking, reinforcing their reputation as guardians of the Japanese mountains.
