To survive the extreme temperatures of deep water, the hammerhead shark (Sphyrna mokarran) would hold its breath. This is the hypothesis put forward by a team of researchers who published a study in the journal Science. Following an analysis of several individuals off Hawaii (North America), scientists conclude that when they dive into the depths of the ocean to feed on giant squid, hammerhead sharks close their gills. This method allows them to maintain constant body heat.
