Located in western Turkey, the Gediz Delta, a Ramsar site since 1988, is one of the most important breeding grounds for the pink flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus. Every year, at least 10,000 are born on the 40 000 ha island (5% to 10% of the world population). The delta also provides habitat for some 290 species of birds, including the curled pelicans and other endangered aquatic mammals. Credit: Céline Hanzen
