In Austria, a bearded vulture is the first bird in the world to be fitted with a bionic prosthesis. Amputated to the end of his right leg, the vulture has been operated on by a team of veterinary surgeons from the Medical University of Vienna (Austria). A few months after the surgery, the vulture can walk, jump, fly and catch its prey. He cannot be reintroduced into the wild because of his operation but will contribute to the reproduction of the species in Austria (Europe). Photo credit: MedUni Vienna/working group Aszmann
