In Cambodian, its name means “the big lake”. The Tonlé Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. It covers an area of 2,700 km², more than three times the size of New York. Located in Cambodia, it has been listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 1997. The Tonlé Sap provides the 3 million people who live in the region, plus half of the fish consumed in Cambodia. It is indeed the most productive fishing area in the world.
