The unusual mode of reproduction of Komodo dragons
6
0
Unlike humans, the sexual determinism of Komodo dragons is given by the female. If no partner is in sight, a female can procreate on her own through parthenogenesis. This mode of reproduction allows the development of an individual from an unfertilized egg. By this process, females can only give birth to young males. It is not ideal for maintaining the genetic diversity of the species but it allows the species to endure. Photo credit: Altraz
