The neck of the giraffe beetle

Endemic to Madagascar, the giraffe beetle has a particularly elongated neck. Males use this neck to impress females by challenging other males. Females, on the other hand, have elongated necks, essential for building their nests after mating with the victorious male. The procedure is technically spectacular: they fold and roll up a leaf from their nurse tree, Dichaetanthera arborea, to create a shelter for their single egg.
