It is the highest peak in the Americas. The Aconcagua culminates at 6,962 meters. Located in Argentina, very close to the Chilean border, it is the highest point of the Andes Cordillera. The first traces of Aconcagua date back to the Jurassic period (from −201.3 to −145 million years). According to several scientific analyses, the mountain range was formed following the collision between part of the earth's crust and the South American plate. The first ascent of Aconcagua was made on January 14, 1897 by Matthias Zurbriggen, a Swiss mountaineer.
