The song of the blue whale, a precious indicator
The blue whale is the largest animal on Earth. Based on research conducted over five years, scientists at Stanford University and the Monterey Bay Aquarium noticed that the whale's song varied early in its migration. When they migrate, blue whales spend less energy hunting. Their vocalizations related to these hunting activities decrease and they are therefore quieter at night. Photo credit: Gregory Smith
