The world's rarest cetacean
2
0
There were only about twenty individuals left in the wild. The vaquita (Phocoena sinus) is the rarest cetacean in the world. Victim of illegal fishing, this small porpoise lives only in the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez, in the Gulf of California (western United States). It is the smallest cetacean in the world: the vaquita measures on average 1.50 Recognizable by the black spots around its eyes, it has been on the list of the 100 most endangered species in the world since 2012.
