It is one of the only birds in the world that does not fly, and its cry is like the bark of a dog. The cagou, an endemic species to New Caledonia, is a bird that has long been threatened with extinction. Its existence was endangered by the wild dogs and pigs which were introduced by the first navigators. Thanks to valuable monitoring of the species, the cagou's population is now estimated at 900 individuals, against around sixty in 1980.
