In northern Norway (Europe), the Svalbard reindeer had almost disappeared. This reindeer subspecies was hunted and its population collapsed. The animal was protected in 1925 and thanks to numerous reintroductions of the species, its population is now estimated at 22,400, almost 13 times more than in the 1950s. Photo credit: James Padolsey
