This animal looks like it's straight out of a fairy tale. The narwhal is a medium-sized whale with a single twisted tusk, arising from the upper left canine tooth, which can measure up to 3 meters in length. Tusks are most commonly found in males, but some females have also been observed with short tusks. Narwhals spend their entire lives in the Arctic waters around Canada, Greenland, Norway and Russia. Like its close relative, the beluga, the narwhal changes color as it ages. At birth, baby narwhals are blue-gray mottled; as juveniles, they are uniformly blue-black; as adults, they become mottled gray. Very old narwhals, especially males, become almost completely white.
