The Gulf of Mottama in Myanmar (South East Asia) is one of the largest marine sanctuaries in the country. In order to protect endangered species, several associations and institutions in the country have just quadrupled the area of the sanctuary. The Gulf of Mottama is home to over 90,000 waterbirds outside the nesting period. Among them: the Eurasian Sandpiper, a critically endangered bird. It is estimated that half of the world's population of this species finds refuge in the Gulf.
