A recent study published in the Proceedings of the national academy of sciences attests that African elephants are allies in the fight against global warming. In the Congo Basin, the presence of African elephants promotes the development of very large trees. The pachyderms eat several dozen kilos of vegetation daily, mainly small trees. By choosing low density trees, they favor the dominance of mature trees that have a very important carbon storage capacity. Elephants also feed on the fruits of these trees. With their excrement, they increase the number of useful trees.
