According to a latest report published by WWF, from 1970 to 2016, the number of vertebrates in the world fell by 68%. This figure comes from monitoring 20,811 populations representing 4,392 animal species around the world. Vertebrates include mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish. The exploitation of land and resources, intensive agriculture, deforestation and the illegal trade in wild animals are the main factors behind this decline.
