They make 142-year old seeds grow!

In 1879, the American botanist William James Beal collects thousands of seeds, stored them, and buried them. His goal? Get to know, over several years, whether or not these seeds can germinate again. Since that date, every 20 years, botanists have unearthed a bottle, planted its contents, and observed the result. So far, no convincing results. But last April (2021), eleven 142-year-old seeds germinated! Encouraging news for studying the survival of certain plant species.
