Hope for the world's rarest penguin

This is their best breeding season for twelve years. The Galápagos penguins, which live on the islands of the same name, are the most northerly living penguins in the world. Thanks to La Niña, there is an abundance of fish, which gives the penguins more food and allows their population to grow. La Niña is a climatic phenomenon that has been reflected for two years by a decrease in the temperature of the surface waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean. Good news for this penguin population, which is estimated at between 1,500 and 4,700 individuals.
