For almost twenty years, Syafyudin Yusuf has been studying the small island (Pulau Badi) within the Spermonde Archipelago in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The archipelago supports the largest coral reef fishery in Indonesia. He works alongside former poachers to rehabilitate coral reefs ravaged by the use of dynamite for fishing. To regenerate the reefs, small pieces of coral are attached to star-shaped metal frames and then placed in the debris left by the fishing explosion. The result: Syafyudin Yusuf and the archipelago's fishermen have revived over eleven hectares of reef in the archipelago. Photo: Mars Coral Reef Restoration Project
