While frogs are usually insect predators, giant water bugs (Lethocerus deyrollei) turn the tables. These aquatic insects, reaching 12 cm in length, prefer the freshwater habitats of America and Southeast Asia. Equipped with powerful mandibles, they feed on fish, frogs, and small birds. When prey approaches, they quickly grab it with their front legs, then pierce it with a dagger-like proboscis, injecting enzymes and potentially anesthetic substances to reverse the roles in the aquatic food chain.
