The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, is one of the most damaging pest species in the world. In Australia and Central America, this tiny insect, which measures between 2 and 6 mm, has caused devastating damage to local ant species while inflicting many allergic sting reactions amongst humans. Its venom has the power to kill small animals like birds. Fire ants can kill newborn calves if they don't stand up quick enough. Considered a formidable pest, the ant is currently the subject of Australia's most expensive eradication campaign to date.
