The fugu or globe fish inflates with water when it feels threatened. Another remarkable characteristic. Although this fish is recognized as a luxurious delicacy due to the delicacy of its flesh, eating it can lead to food-related illnesses, including death. The organs (liver, ovaries, intestines and skin) of this creature contain tetrodotoxin: a powerful neurotoxin that paralyzes muscles and causes death by respiratory arrest. The presence of poison in such a tasty fish has given rise to the following proverb: フグは食いたし命は惜しし [= eat fugu but hold on for dear life]. This proverb is used when you hesitate to do something you know is dangerous.
