Blood-squirting toad

The Texas horned toad (Phrynosoma cornutum) lives in the dry regions of Canada, the United-States and Mexico. When attacked, the Texas horned toad expels jets of blood from its eyes. The spray, which can travel up to 1.5 m, is caused by ruptured blood vessels under the eye. The process of self-hemorrhage is not unique to the lizard, and has been detected in insects.
