How does an oyster create a pearl?

The Explorers
A pearl is created in an oyster. Whenever a grain of sand or another element tries to interfere, the oyster makes mother-of-pearl as a defense mechanism and envelops the intruder with this material to protect its shell. The pearl can be black, white or golden depending on the oyster species. In the wild, only one in 10,000 oysters produces a valuable pearl. Photo credit: Ben Thouard / The Explorers
