The female ferret dies if she does not mate. All the ferrets affected are hyperestrogenic: when they produce too high a level of estrogen. They must imperatively put off mating to end this accumulation of hormones. If they do not mate, the heat period continues which weakens their immune systems and most often leads to death. After three months of uninterrupted heat, the ferret inevitably dies.
