An insolite feeding way!

It has a particular way of eating. The Black Skimmer (Rynchops niger) is an aquatic that lives in South America and some coasts of the United States. The majority of its diet consists of small fish. To feed, the bird flies over the water. It immerses only the lower part of its jaw, called the lower mandible. When its prey comes into contact with the lower mandible, the bird throws its prey in the air, closes its beak and eats the fish in midair. The Black Skimmer population is doing well and has been relatively stable since the 1970s.
