Pyrus calleryana, or Chinese pear, is the most common ornamental pear species in North America. When its flowers bloom in spring, they give off a nauseating odor. Californian scientists have set out to unravel this mystery. They have discovered that the Callery pear emits chemical compounds called "volatile amines". These compounds are derivatives of ammonia.
