The peak of the Puy de Sancy (6,187 feet / 1,886 metres) appears today in the form of a neck, a volcanic body of ten to several hundred metres high that was created by erosion. It corresponds to the filling of a volcanic chimney – hence its conical cylindrical shape – or of an open fault in the casing (pre-existing geological structure) by magma rendered viscous by the presence of numerous sanidine crystals.
