A faithful restoration overall

The Haut-Koenigsbourg castle was destroyed in 1633 during the Thirty Years' War. The French State declared its ruins a Historic Monument in 1862, but Kaiser Wilhelm II ordered its reconstruction nonetheless after Alsace's annexation into the German Empire. He saw the restored monument as an opportunity for his dynasty's name to shine. The architect Bodo Ebhardt was entrusted with the work. Though he modified some sections of the fortress to please the Emperor, he remained faithful to the medieval drawings and ruins overall.
