Étretat is a seaside and tourist town on the Côte d'Albâtre (Alabaster Coast) in the Seine-Maritime department. Its three cliffs consist of Cretaceous limestone and strata of flint that become pebbles on the beach. An underground river would have dug a series of three arches there. The Aiguille Creuse (Hollow Spire) in front of the Aval cliff is made of harder limestone but has recently lost its tip. It now has a flat surface 11.5 to 13 ft (3.50 to 4 m) wide. Legend says it is hollow and contains the treasures of the Kings of France.
