The Massif des Maures, which rises to 2,559 ft (780 m), stretches on nearly 37 mi (60 km) in length and 18.6 mi (30 km) in width from Hyères to Fréjus in the Var department. With an area of 333,592 acres (135,000 ha) comprising twenty-six municipalities, it covers nearly a quarter of the department, including a large part of the coast. The name of the massif comes from the Provencal Leï Mauro, meaning the black mountain because of the forests, mainly of cork oaks and chestnut trees, which darken its reliefs on the north side.
