A palace divided by rivalries

The construction of the Lascaris Palace in Castellar was decided in 1435 following an agreement between the inhabitants and the local lords. Built on either side of Rue Longue, it originally consisted of three bodies, including the Casa Grande and the Turris Palace, surrounding a paved Cour des Miracles. The palace was subsequently modified many times and later divided due to the rivalries between the family's branches. The two-headed dark eagle of the coat of arms of Castellar visible on the paving of the Cour des Miracles is reminiscent of one of the most prestigious ancestors of the lineage, Emperor Theodore II Lascaris, who ruled the Byzantine Empire in the 13th century.
