Jaumont stone has been exploited around Metz since Gallo-Roman times. Various archaeological sites in the region revealed remains of buildings made of it. It is extracted at the Roncourt quarry, which covers 494 acres (200 ha). This stone's hardness makes it versatile, and it can be used for building both the floors and the windows and pillars. The rock is full of iron oxide that gives it its ocher yellow color under sunlight.
