The signs of activity of the Pavin

According to Pierre Lavina, a geologist-volcanologist, and Thierry del Rosso, a hydrogeological-geotechnical engineer, there are signs of activity of the Pavin more recent than 6,700 years, date of the Montchal-Pavin eruptive system. These scientists speak of a second volcanic phase that would have occurred 3,500 years ago, small eruptions and phreatic activities (geysers and solfataras) 1,000 to 2,000 years ago, and diffuse gaseous emanations until today. During the last millennium, the overflow of the lake would have deposited mudslides in the Couze valley, and significant landslides would have occurred under the lake's surface.
