The origins of half-timbering

The Alsace rural house's aspect varies according to the agricultural environment and its structure. Its arrangement depends above all on the type of activity carried out. Therefore, in the vineyard, priority is given to the cellar, to the press area, to the shed where the equipment is stored. The origin of the half-timbering probably goes back to protohistoric times. Back then, huts were built with wooden post structures, some traces of which are observable in Holtzheim, in Alsace. The medieval house is another evolution of primitive architecture. The interior of its attic takes the shape of an inverted boat.
