The Grand Canal of Versailles

The Grand Canal and the Pièce d’Eau des Suisses are two major elements of the park of the Château de Versailles. The 800-hectare park, bordered by straight alleys, encloses the Château in a green setting. Designed in the shape of a cross by André Le Nôtre, the Grand Canal was built between 1668 and 1679. The largest basin in the park offers a luminous gap of 1,670 metres from east to west and 1,000 metres from north to south, with a width of 60 metres. It was the setting for memorable summer festivals with rowboats, ships and gondolas, while in winter skates and sleighs took over its frozen waters.
