Fringing reef and coral formations

The island of Rurutu represents 18.6sqmi (30km2) of emerged land. It is surrounded by a fringing reef on almost all its periphery. The coral formations there are even more developed than elsewhere in French Polynesia because of the coolness of the water. The fringing reef gives way to rare and small lagoons on the west and south coasts.
