New Caledonia is mobilizing to protect its mangrove areas. In addition to reserves, marine protected areas and areas listed as World Heritage by UNESCO where specific management measures are implemented, the environment code of the South Province has classified mangroves as protected ecosystems since 2009. As for the North province, it protects the mangrove trees of the genera Avicennia, Bruguiera, Rhizophora and Ceriops.
