Rimatara was the last of the Austral Islands discovered by Europeans in 1811. The first protestant missionaries of the London Missionary Society landed there in 1821 and converted the 300 inhabitants of the island in less than 2 years. Protestant temples are still very well maintained by the some 879 inhabitants of the 3 villages of the island : Anapoto, Amaru and Mutua Ura.
