Polishing provides a new shine. It erases traces of tools and molds, and gives the material its much sought-after shine. There are two polishing options: Chemical polishing, in an hydrofluoric acid bath. Manual polishing, said mechanical: the glassmaker works the crystal in contact with a polishing wheel. He can also choose to roughen the part. The visibility of the engraving will be reduced on some part for the benefit of others. Lalique became famous for his satin finish on crystal.
