On the site of Julius Caesar's victory

The battle of Alesia in 52 BC was the last of a war between the Romans and Gallic tribes that lasted almost seven years. Annoyed by his defeat at Gergovie, Julius Caesar drove Vercingetorix's troops into the Gallic oppidum of Alesia on Mont Auxois. He encircled them with a double network of fortifications still visible today. The Gauls tried a break in vain before the people themselves delivered their leader to the Romans. Vercingétorix was brought back to Rome, imprisoned for six years, exhibited during Julius Caesar's triumph in 46 BC, and probably executed afterward.
