The mangroves play a major ecological role. The entangled root networks of the rhizophores form a mesh above the ground which retains alluvium and sediments from erosion and landslides and prevents the lagoon silting up and the corals asphyxiation. At the same time, they protect the coastline from wind and sea erosion by shielding the waves and currents while mitigating the impact of the weather turbulences.
