Lifou Island, a raised limestone atoll
The island of Lifou, in the archipelago of the Loyalty Islands of New Caledonia, is a limestone atoll made up of calcite and dolomitic karsts of coral origin. It constitutes, like the other islands of the archipelago, the emerged part of the Loyalty ridge which experienced three main tectonic phases at the end of which its summit gradually formed the raised atolls that we know today.
