The medieval city of Carcassonne is one of the landmarks of the Cathar country in southwestern France. The Viscounts Trencavel set up their court in the Château Comtal of the city in 1125. From the top of its ramparts, one can gaze upon the diversity of the surrounding landscape. The historical monuments and places around Carcassonne are plentiful. The village of Montolieu, the Abbey of Villelongue, or the Cave of Limousis, are among many attractions renowned in the region.
