The resurrection of 1900

After centuries of conflicts for its conquest, the castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg, in ruins, became the property of German Emperor Wilhelm II in 1899. The Kaiser was passionate about the Middle Ages and wished to revive the fortress and use it as a medieval showcase of his dynasty's glory. He ordered its thorough reconstruction in 1900. The architect Bodo Ebhardt had a keep, thick walls, arrow slits, moats, drawbridges, and machicolations rebuilt from 1900 until the inauguration with great pomp of the new castle in 1908.
