In southern Honduras, two turtle species live in the marsh, between Choluceta and the Golf of Fonseca : the Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina), nicknamed the "sambunango" and the Meso-American Slider (Trachemys venusta) nicknamed the "hicotea".
