The Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is one of the 4 subspecies of Asian elephants with those of India, Sri Lanka and Borneo. Smaller than the African elephant, it measures between 5 and 9ft (1.50-2.75m) at the withers and weighs about 5t in adulthood. Its 2,000 or so specimens spread over Indonesia's Borneo and Sumatra islands share their dangerously reduced forest habitat with other endangered species such as the Sumatran rhinoceros, tiger and orangutan.
