Donkey’s milk, oils, and caustic soda

In the workshop at the Domaine d’Esthine, soap-making is just beginning (photo). In a large container, organic fats (olive and coconut oils, shea butter), fresh donkey’s milk and essential oils are slightly heated and mixed with caustic soda, using an electric blender. After a few minutes, the mixture thickens, and the soap paste is ready to be poured into the moulds. Handling caustic soda requires precautions to be taken: the wearing of gloves, glasses, and clothing covering the body is highly recommended.
