Dedicated to the glory of French art

The triumph of the Grand Palais was absolute when the World Fair was inaugurated on 14 April 1900, by the President of the Republic, Emile Loubet. All visitors admired the combination of stone, steel and glass in this modern and neo-classical building. The grand staircase and the glass roof were lauded, despite the criticism of some grumblers. Attendance at the 1900 World Fair surpassed that of 1889. An inscription engraved on the pediment of the west wing reminds us that the Grand Palais was dedicated by the Republic “To the glory of French art”.
